The ride

We roll out from the café on quiet farm roads west of Volcán town, weaving between dairy pastures and vegetable plots with the cone of Volcán Barú rising behind us. The riding is flat and unhurried — packed dirt and gravel lanes with almost no traffic.

After a relaxed hour we reach the Lagunas de Volcán, the highest wetland lakes in Panama, sitting at around 1,200 meters and ringed by forest. We take our time here: walk the shoreline, watch the water, and let the highlands do the talking before an easy roll back to town.

Birdlife on the lagoons

The lagoons are one of the best-known birding spots in the Chiriquí highlands. Herons and other wetland birds work the shallows, and the surrounding forest hums with highland species. Resplendent quetzals live in the cloud forests nearby — sightings on this ride are luck, not promise, but the neighborhood is theirs.

Bring binoculars if you have them; we build in plenty of quiet stops.

Who it's for

This is our most relaxed ride — perfect for families, casual riders, and anyone who hasn't been on a bike in a while. Two and a half hours at conversation pace, with only 150 meters of gentle climbing spread across the whole route. We finish back at the café with a fresh cup of highland coffee.

Good to know

How fit do I need to be?

If you can ride a bike around the block, you can do this tour. The route is flat, the pace is relaxed, and we stop often.

What should I bring?

Closed shoes, sunscreen, and a light layer — highland mornings are cool. We provide the bike, helmet, water, and a snack. Binoculars are a great extra for the birdlife.

What happens if it rains?

Tours run year-round. Mornings are the driest window from May to November, so we recommend the 08:00 start in those months. Light rain doesn't stop us; if the weather turns truly bad, we reschedule at no charge.
